STRUCTURED CLINICAL REASONING
Structured Clinical Reasoning (SCR) is a core component of the LDS Part 2 examination, designed to assess a candidate’s ability to think and act like a safe, competent UK general dental practitioner.
In this section, candidates are presented with 6 clinical scenarios and are required to reason through the case logically and systematically. Rather than focusing on hands-on clinical skills, the SCR assesses how well candidates can:
Interpret clinical information and patient histories
Identify key problems and risk factors
Formulate appropriate diagnoses or differential diagnoses
Justify investigations and management plans
Demonstrate patient-centred, safe, and ethical decision-making
 
Examiners are looking for structured thinking, clear justification of decisions, and alignment with UK clinical guidelines and standards, not just factual knowledge. The emphasis is on how candidates think, prioritise, and explain their reasoning in real-world clinical situations.
